Range Safety is a serious instructional game that teaches players some fundamentals on safety at the shooting range. The game takes players through a voice-acted handbook explaining some of the rules, and then puts the player on the range where they can act out these safety guidelines in a simulation.
Platform: PC
Genre: Serious Instructional Game
Development Time: 2 Weeks
Team Size: 1
Role: Solo Project
My Take:
Rang Safety was my first solo project; the requirement of the build was to make a game that is both a serious game and an instructional one. The player needed to learn something by the time they finished the tutorial. With the popularity of the first-person shooter genre, I though it would be fitting to address firearm safety in real life through this simulation. While I found that there was some freedom with the project since I was the only one working on it, I found myself lacking in the necessary resources and development time needed to build a fantastic looking and powerfully functioning game. As a result much of the art of the game was designed as 2D graphic art in Photoshop or designed withing the game engine itself. Additionally the gun model and some of the accessories were downloaded from free source websites. The resulting game if entirely functional and accomplishes its design goals, but it lacks the polish that I believe a team-based work flow provides. Ultimately I find that game development through teamwork is much more effective in most situations, but solo projects can provide freedom of design.
